FIREWEED CHARITY HELPING VULNERABLE WOMEN & CHILDREN

Fireweed helps women and children suffering from inequality, poverty, violence and discrimination. We enable vulnerable women and children to evolve and flourish from misery, hardship and misfortunate circumstances in such parts of the world as the trustees determine.

 

SO WHY THE NAME FIREWEED? 

The fireweed plant is the first plant to grow from the ashes in the aftermath of forest fires. Likewise our charity has been inspired and has risen from the memory of those who have perished in the struggle to gain equality and justice for women.

 

 

FIREWEED'S INSPIRATION

As fireweed growing from the ashes is a symbol of hope and determination, we also remember those who were victims of the 1911 factory fire and individuals who are currently being deprived of their rights and need help.

​

Workers went on strike in 1911 for better working conditions and pay at the New York Triangle Shirtwaist factory. In the course of the strike, workers found themselves trapped in the factory and fire engulfed them. 146 workers mostly women and child labourers perished in the fire. This historic moment triggered international women organisations to announce the 8th of March to be International Working Women's Day. In 1975 the United Nations (UN) also recognised the 8th of March to be "International Women's Day".

 

Today more than 100 years later women are still suffering from inequality, poverty, violence and discrimination. Women also suffer socially and economically through the lack of education and in some societies women are treated as second class were they barley have any legal rights. Women are currently losing their lives through violence, discrimination and ethnic or regional war.

 

Fireweed as a charity has risen from the ashes to commemorate the women and children who died in the 1911 shirt factory fire as well as all other women who have lost their lives by fighting for women rights and liberation. Let those who have perished inspire us to come together to alleviate women's suffering and to improve life for the future generations. Fireweed is here to support all those in their fight for change.

 

We cannot take on this task alone. We need your help so let's help each other to help vulnerable women and children and address all gender related issues. No one person is to blame for the problem, but each of us are responsible to find the solution.
